Sharing favorite iOS Apps

Fara from VA Beach schools shares her favorite apps

  1. Pocket Universe Express - You aim your iPad at the sky and it shows you the stars you're facing.  You can put it in day or night view to see stars and constellations.
  2. iCell - plant and animal cells in 3D, you can pinch, zoom, rotate, etc. to really explore.  Great way to intro and let kids explore cells
  3. Geoboard - virtual geoboard.  Choose your rubberbands and place them on the virtual geoboard.  Can choose to color in the area a rubberband is surrounding.
  4. DocsTeach - works hand in hand with a website from the National Archive.  docsteach.org  Fara's sample site code is wec565 - you can pull in any document from the National Archive into any lesson
  5. Flat Stanley - you can create him or her any way you like, then add your Flat Stanley or Stella to any photo.  You can open a camera within the app that will take a picture with your Flat Stanley in the picture.
  6. Apples - telling time facts
  7. Trading Cards - upload the image, then students fill in info to create a trading card about a fictional or real person, fictional or real place, object, event, artifact, vocab word, etc.
  8. Word Mover - like refrigerator magnets of words pertaining to a particular topic that you can then manipulate.  Ex:  words from the Preamble.  You can also create your own word lists.
  9. Master the Math - kind of lime Who Wants to be a Millionaire with math questions, and it collects data.

Kim from VA Beach schools shares her favorite apps

  1. Animator - flipbooks
  2. Toontastic - kids brainstorm a story idea, then create a cartoon by drawing or choosing a background.  There are 5 story parts, and students set parameters and music.
  3. Puppet Pals - similar to Toontastic, but you can bring in your own characters and backgrounds from your pictures.
  4. Tangrams - virtual tangram manipulatives
  5. Display Recorder - record yourself - video and your voice - of you demonstrating something on your iPad
  6. Minecraft - virtual world where you break down things and build - can have multiple users in the same world at the same time
  7. Chicken Coop Fractions - a question is posed, and you move the nest to catch the chicken's egg before she lays it so it doesn't break.
  8. OhNo!Fractions - choose greater or less than, then you prove it by drawing the two fractions.  You can choose the largest denominator

Learn to Scratch

Scratch - imagine * program * share

An easy, interactive way to program and have kids program.

Getting Started with Scratch

Two Albemarle County teachers (Jon - middle school), and Erica (Elementary) hold Coder Dojo classes after school where kids come together to learn Scratch and make programs. Here's their presentation on SCRATCH

Main components:

  • Palette of COMMANDS - 1st column on left
  • Scripts/Costumes/Sounds - 2nd column
  • SCRIPTS for Sprites
  • Stage - view window with background
  • Sprites - characters/components
  • Start & Stop - button on top right that allows you to preview
Kinect2Scratch - You don't need an Xbox, just the Kinect bar and this software, and this software will record movement so you can use Scratch to make interactive games that respond to your movement.

Sample cards (shown in the presentation) for kids to use for practice available for download on the Scratch site.

Check out the Scratch Project site to see some of the many projects others have made.  Neat stuff.

Being Smart with SMART

Dr. Michael Rossi

How to avoid turning your back on students when at the board...& how to maintain engagement

To erase or not to erase: (don't turn your back to erase & waste valuable seconds or allow disengagement)
simply just add a blank page
at end of class, convert handwriting to text & save
OR use the Clear ink icon--not a default on the toolbar

Imbed Browser or webpages in pages Notebook 11
Insert
Internet Browser
Pin it! (if you don't pin it, it will default to the smart page browser) then save file
If you use dual page...you can drag items from web browser to new page

Single touch board? How to make it more interactive...
options: add wireless computer mouse, add smart slate, your iPad & iPhone (doceri free app for iPad) allows you to navigate in the room & use your iPad) (reflection app--$14.99 needs port opened for iPad to work through network)

Notebook Express or Viewer--free download from smarttech.com

Page Recording (located in properties tab)
recording begins when pen hits the board; stop recording
play/pause for discussion...for playback

Have you Heard?

**Personal Note: This session was not what I expected from the title; but so many other people got up & left once he did the intro about this session being about audio enhancement products that I felt bad & couldn't leave.

Here's a few things I noted:

sound decreases 6 dB every time distance is doubled
there is an app for sound decibel reading

audio enhancement products--infrared devices
adding microphone system to teacher; speakers installed in ceilings and in back of room
amazing results in achievement!
most kids reported that they liked that the teacher didn't have to yell
great for classroom management
