Power-Up with Instructional Technology Professional Development

Chesterfield County Public Schools Tamara Howerton - Technology Integrator
Finding way to help teachers through Blended Learning

  • Providing PD where they are and when they are ready
  • Usually PD offered after school (Face to Face), then expanded to online modules
  • Excited with what they learned, but didnt have time to implement
  • Tied PD to content area and specific skill set
  • Used Edmodo create chunks of course work and to monitor completion of assignements
How Did you Implement the Instructional Technology Professional Development Model

  • Began by doing research for models
  • Looked at what other counties were doing.  Some were buying PD packages
  • We set up IT Learning Academy (Held at various locations)
  • Talked with instructional specialists
  • Built PD in Google Sites
  • Curriculum Based
  • Included Technology User Guides on the site (included video tutorials)
  • TSIP Class - Totally online
  • 17 week course for TSIPs
  • Courses were aligned to individual teacher goals
  • Modules are created by ITRTs
  • Gradebook in Edmodo is used to monitor artifacts being turned in or quiz taken
  • Create TIP folders in Modules to help with assignments

Five Key iPad Tips

1. Go Back- Double tap the home screen button (single round button at the center bottom of the front of the iPad). All open apps will be displayed on the bottom of the screen. This will allow you to go back to a recently opened app. You should also close open apps that you are not using as this slows the iPad down and runs the battery down faster.

2. Screen Shot- Take a photo of your screen by pushing the home screen button and the button located on the top right of the iPad at the same time. You will hear a click and the screen will blink. You can view the photo by clicking on the “Photos” app icon on your home screen.

3. Search- To quickly find apps, from the home screen, swipe your finger to the right until the search iPad field comes up. Enter the first few letters of the name of the app you are looking for.

4. Multi-tasking Gestures- If you have multiple apps open at the same time, using four fingers to swipe across the screen will allow you to move between apps. Placing all five fingers on the screen and squeezing them together toward the center of the screen will take you to the home screen.

5. Fake App icon- From the Safari browser, if you would like to add a website to your home screen for easy retrieval, click on the rectangle with an arrow pointing toward the right (located next to the open book icon on the top left of the screen). Then click the “Add to Home Screen” button. Next, name the icon and click the blue “Add” button.

Eleven Strategies for Managing iPads

1. Plan ahead for the activity that you want students to do. Be sure the app works in advance.

2. Set Clear Expectations- Classroom AUP- Have students help create a set of 3 – 5 classroom expectations for iPad usage.

3. Routines and Procedures – Practice established routines and procedures regularly so they become a habit of mind.

4. Digital Citizenship- Review digital citizenship weekly. Use the broken record technique.

5. Create Specific Folders- Place apps that you want students to use in specific folders on the home screen.
6. Hide Apps – Hide app icons like Safari in folders on other iPad pages.

7. Use Centers/Stations- If you only have one iPad use it as a center or learning station.

8. Assign numbers – Assign each student a specific iPad number and make sure that each time they use an iPad they are using the one that they were assigned.

9. Check-out, Check-in process (posted)- Create a specific check-in, check-out process.

10. Assign leaders – Create iPad leaders to assist in the distribution and collection of iPads.

11. Power down signal – Create a “power down” signal so that students know when to stop what they are doing.

The Power of the Flipped Classroom: Notes taken during session

To flip a classroom you need to be very mobile.

Why I flipped?
The Set Up
The Tools
Resources to get you started

Why???
Change the focus, and time.

i want to...
Change the focus from teacher to student
Make students more responsible for their own learning
Spend more time helping students when they need it most
Give students more support

Youtube allows us to swap ideas with others from all over the world.

What does the flipped classroom look like?
Watch the notes at home do homework at school.

Need support from administration.

Issues:
Kids are ashamed to talk about what their situations are.
No internet: how to resolve, V:drive or cc, flash drive, put videos on these types of media.

Resources:
Camtasia Studio for screen capture. Allows for editing of videos.
Word for typing notes
Smart probably has a screen capture, can also be used for writing and capture.
Videos hosted on Youtube, create an account., Teachertube, Sophia, Schooltube
Explain Everything and iPad App.

Work Flow:
Create student notepacks (word)
Create questions about notes (google form)
Create flip chart using notpacket (ActivInspire)
Record lesson and edit (Camtasia)
Post videos to Youtube
Place videos on student accessible drive at school

Keep videos 15 minutes or less

Remind101

Flipping give kids time to think, they can do it when convenient to them. Easier to concentrate, can talk about whet they don't understand in class instead of taking notes.

Creating and Collecting Digital Content: Notes taken during session

Creating and Collecting Digital Content

www.drawzit.com

How to I collect the urls.
Use a google form. Set up a google form to create a digital dropbox.
Ask for first and last name, and the name of the assignment, make these required. Also ask for the url, make it required.
Notes: not required
Use tinyurl to make the url shorter.
Now students can submit their work and I can go to the spreadsheet created and view what the students submitted work.

Go to tammy tip of the week 110, create QR Codes in the spreadsheet

googledocs: have the students go to publish to the web and it will give them the url.

jing: creates a url for those things that don't give you a url automatically.
by techsmith

you can use jing to make a video and get a url for that video.

Using  Youtube, students can post a video to youtube, get the url and post it to the form.
Class Flipping: These are notes taken during session.

Kahn Academy: www.khanacademy.org

Does flipping mean we have to use video. Can it mean just using digital content.

TED Ed: lessons worth sharing

What does this mean for the role of the teacher.
There are better ways to deliver your content. Use those who a more interesting than you are.   Finding videos that get the concepts across so that you can then work with students when they come into class.

Show a funny video, an information video, an amazing video.

Pros:
Fun and engaging for students.
Gives students time in class to work on understandings and deeper concepts.
Allows the instructor more time in class to cover questions or misconceptions.
Students are more in charge of their learning.
Makes the classroom a participatory engaging learning environment.

Cons:
Students don't watch video.
Hard to ask questions.
No access to computers for students.
Teachers can't offer feedback during instruction.
Added time to develope a lesson.

That which was done at school is now done at home.

Flipping speaks the language of today's students.
Flipping helps busy students.
Helps stuggling students.
Helps students of all abilities.
Students can pause and rewind the teacher.
Increases student-student interacion.
Increases teacher-student interaction.

Flipping helps programs:
Consistancy
Student Engagement
Just-in-Time and Targeted Faculty Support
Can also help with schedule difficulties.

21st Century Teaching & Learning (Spotlight Session)

21st Century Teaching & Learning
Tammy Worcester's spotlight afternoon session

Special thanks to Bradley Comstock for allowing us to use his mobile hot spot for web viewing of Tammy's session on our way home in the car!

Discussion on how TIME makes a difference & how everyone's biggest complaint is that they don't have enough TIME!

Examples she used for how TIME makes a difference in our thinking process--especially when you're stressed with time limitations...

Use technology as a timesaver:
  • Google Search Engine:
    • as a calculator (type problem directly in search bar)
    • as a conversion tool (metric to standard, Celsius to Fahrenheit
    • as a dictionary (type: define word; some dictionary entries have a little speaker icon for pronunciation)
  • Google Chrome
    • microphone option in search bar (to speak what you want to search for)
    • filtering options at top of screen in Chrome allows you to search sites for specific readability...search tools | All results | Reading Level (basic, intermediate, advanced)
    • double gray arrows beside the web search results (right hand side) shows preview of website
    • type "chicken" in search bar; Chrome now has a Recipes tab at top; use search tools, you can check other ingredients you have to narrow search results; you can choose how many calories you want the dish to have...etc
  • Wolfram Alpha (http://www.wolframalpha.com)--knowledge engine--she used three examples:
    • Virginia
    • Virginia and Kansas (comparing chart)
    • Big Mac (nutritional content)
  • Activities
    • instead of just having students research & write a report about something (which they'll just copy & paste text from internet)--have them do an acrostic poem in powerpoint requiring facts learned from their research to be the text
    • write a postcard home or to a friend about visiting a place they're studying or researching having them include at least 3 facts; use ppt & print handouts (2 per page) for appropriate sized printing of postcards
    • recordmp3.org--EASY audio recording site; saves recording as URL for accessing later
    • kaywa (QR code creator: http://qrcode.kaywa.com/)
    • http://www.drawzit.com/--online paint program that creates a URL for the image
  • Apps
    • Reflections (creates a wireless document camera for showing what you're doing on iPad or iPhone)
    • ShowMe
    • Educreations
    • Sock Puppets--teach vocab words, tell about books, set up scenario for reviewing character traits, classroom rules, directions--save to YouTube to create a URL
    • Use QR code reader to assess Google Form to submit answers to teacher (Quiz Bowl)

Motivating the Reluctant Reader Through Technology

Dr. Rob Furman

South Park Elementary Center Principal - rob@furmanr.com www.furmanr.com

Presentation can be found here

Tame the Text

10 things to keep in mind when motivating a reluctant reader (not necessarily involving technology)

* Useful site for polling * Poll Everywhere - www.pollev.com - good way to share/submit thoughts

How can we use technology to help us motivate readers

1 - Don't Judge the Reader

  • We have to find a way to get that first spark - we want kids to want to read
  • Storia or Bookster, Kindle or Nook books - take away the fear of being judged by the cover of the book - share Storia with parents, when they purchase books the teacher gets the points

2 - Offer a range of materials -

  • Scholastic Book Wizard - "Find Just the Right Books" - find books that are about certain topics, or similar to other books. Also great for leveling your classroom library
  • GoodReads - create an account and keep track of then rate books you've read, plus make a list of books you want to read, as they read and rate books they get suggestions for more books to read

3 - Provide Time for Dialogue

  • Conversations about books and reading
  • What is the last book that you read?
  • How did you feel when it ended?
  • What did you want to do after you completed the book?
  • How many of us want to answer 10 questions to prove comprehension?
  • in2books - through ePals - screened adults are mentors to grade 3-5 struggling readers, teachers go between the teacher - UnitedWay and other organizations often underwrite the program. Authentic, rich communication about books. Classes can communicate with other classes about what they're reading.
  • book-clubs-resource.com - book discussions
  • Skype with another class - robfurman - rob@furmanr.com - willing to read a book then Skype to have a discussion
  • Skype an Author Network - Capture the Flag author will Skype for free skypeanauthor.wetpaint.com

4 - Give Readers a Toolkit - here are some technology resources

5 - Don't impose on kids, let them read at their comfort level

  • Never say "that's too easy for you" or things that would discourage them reading. If they have that interest, let them read it. If it's too hard, read it together, give them the book on CD to follow along.

6 - Dive Deep

  • Scholastic - The Stacks - after students read a book,
  • BitStrips - Make a comic

7 - Value Browsing and Rereading

8 - Building Stamina

9 - Teach Students to Curate Their Own Reading Lives

10 - Remember, Joy Matters

  • There is no greater gift we can give to our children than the joy of reading!
  • Model a joy of reading
  • Know your students and your collection

Something NOT ipad related for once!= The new Dell Windows 8 computer.

Tech. Difficulties for the Dell rep so far.  Latitude 10 tablet for using Windows 8. Office comes with Windows RT. Xps12 will work as a tablet and ultra book mode.

The XPS12Duo would have been a good computer in place of the tablets we got last year.

Coder Dojo

Started in Ireland. An environment where different ages are encouraged to code on computers.
Various languages are covered.

Scratch, html, Cass, php, minecraft, mysql, stencyl, kodu are used primarily.
4 day stronger session was started first with only 50 seats. There was am over flow so they had to expand this to 100 seats and another session had to be started with all day sessions. Ended up being 200 kids for the first try with many on the waiting list.

4 and 5 year olds were mixed in with older kids. They held there own. Kids were encouraged to help each other. Parents also came and learned and some even became advocates. The idea of NEVER putting your hands on a students mouse were important.

Day 2 involved Stencyl. Physics had to be discussed to deal with some of the programming.
Currently have about 5 dojos running at once. Instructors ate volunteers. Sessions run monthly or bi-weekly.

They started using notepad then composer for early programming before getting more complicated stuff.

Augmented Reality

Band aid brand ar.  As one example, you can scan in a muppets band aide and it will play music or something related.

Lunch Rush is an education app for iPad.
-has a PDF that is downloaded and printed to use with the app.

Wondering if the presenter will be showing Aurasma (sp?) She did cover this about a 1/2hr in.  This has some of the most promise. May be able to get an educators account for free. This is cross platform.

Zooburst  is another app.

Presenter is showing a lot of noneducational apps.

Augmented Reality Defender is a pay= another game.

History Pin may show places scanned as they appeared years ago. Not sure if you would need flash cards.

AR Player is a little better than the rest, but you only have one marker that you program for what you want to see.

Ipads for autism students

One presenter could not be present.

We were shown various apps that could be used for autistic students.
Presenter said he will list the apps on his website:  luedtech.com
He tries to stick with free or low priced when possible.

Creating & Collecting Digital Work (Tammy Worcester)

Creating Digital Work

goal: get each student's work to end up with a URL

try: www.drawzit.com (won't work on iPad)

rover app---flash app for ipad? websites will sometimes work if you open them in this app

setup digital drop box for kids to submit URLs...use a Google form
questions on the form:
First Name
Last Name
Assignment Name
URL
notes to teacher

Favorite URL shortener website: tinyurl.com

Create audio recordings online that provide a URL:
www.croak.it (easy, and it has an iPAd app)
www.recordmp3.org (quality is better in firefox)
vocaroo.com (QR codes won't play automatically, you'll have to press play)

For giving student feedback as an audio in this way, link the audio URL to a QR code & print the code for them to scan

QR Code Generator (qrcode.kaywa.com)
QR code creation within Google spreadsheet....Tip 110 on her website...HOLY COW! I wanna try this!
running "reflection" on her computer, she showed her networked phone on the screen to run the QR code scanner & have it appear on her phone.

Have kids record their Christmas lists, create a QR code & send out...other ideas:
record book reviews, record all about me, record a child reading, record a child describing their artwork hanging on display & post QR code beside it.

Scribble Maps (scribblemaps.com)
kids can mark up a map!

Google Docs
File | Publish to the web (however, now this is public!)

List view in Google form spreadsheet results (allows you to filter what you need)

Evernote (www.evernote.com)

What about websites that DON'T provide a URL for student work?
www.readwritethink.org
abcya.com
wordle.com
tagzedo?

3rd party download--jing--and keep it open
click the sun
add | select the part you want | select the image | upload as URL

iPad apps with URLs;
croak.it (audio)
showme & Educreations (records both drawing & audio)
*Sock Puppets
YouTube

Google Activities for Kids!

Presenter - Tammy Worcester
Handouts

The Google Activities Tammy showed us today require a Google Account for teachers, but not necessarily for the students

Google Maps - Teacher can login and create a map, adding place-markers and details

  • Markers to follow along different places with a book
  • If you couldn't live in Virginia, where would you live - add details about why
  • Rock band going on tour - mark tour locations on map and what would you do in your spare time?
  • *Scribble Maps* - students can create a map without logging in. They can save the map, e-mail it, or even embed it into a blog or webpage. They can choose a mapID to access the map later. They then create a password so they can edit the map later.

Google Docs (Drive)

  1. Free
  2. Collaborative - you can potentially have up to 50 people in a Google Doc at the same time
  3. Cloud Based - can access from anywhere

Collaborative Spreadsheet - Create and share out, then go to tinyurl.com

  • Ex: tinyurl.com/twvste1
  • Google Form - Sample Survey - tinyurl.com/twvste2
  • Tools - Show Summary of Responses to show graphs of multiple choice and checkbox items
  • **batchgeo.com - paste info with location data, and it will map including the data with each placemarker. You can then save that map to edit later, or to share out, embed on a site

Collaborative Word Cloud

  • Start in a spreadsheet and type your questions across the top, then create a form from there - Ex: tinyurl.com/twvste3
  • Kids fill out with name and words to describe _____ (ex: words to describe a famous person, etc.) - good way to collect words before going to wordle.com or **tagzedo.com (similar to Wordle, but it allows you to put the word cloud into a shape.

Quizzes with Google

  • Tammy's Tips and Tricks on her website, she has a tip of the week - #81 has templates for quizzes - use the form to collect data, put your answers at the top then it will score for you.

Google activities for kids

www.tammyworcester.com

Google maps-
Can create own custom maps
My places button allows this.
Students can mark places on a map like in a lit trip. Stops could have a little descriptions based on research.
Students can create place marks in 5 other states where they wheels like to live other than VA and why.
Can create a path down a road with chapters added.

Scribble maps- can be used without a google account. More pushpins than on google.
Sharing can be a little more difficult though.
Map ID allows students to get back to their map instead of needing an account. A password is needed that is made up at the time of creation.

Google drive-
You can now download google drive for viewing and editing.
She showed collaboration features and then used TinyURL to share the link.

She then showed forms.
Created a form and had viewers this in.
Then showed how to work with some of the numerical data.
Show summary of responses under form option.
Highlighting columns and copying... Batchgeo  allows you to paste your information to create a map with all of your information. Saving and moving on allows a link to be created with the information to embed.

Creating a word cloud in a spreadsheet...
Filling out the spreadsheet headers for the questions before working in the form is a quicker way to setup a form.
Used Tagxedo and Wordle with the information posted.

She then used a form top create a test.
By using a template, grading can be done automatically.

Sharing favorite iOS Apps

Fara from VA Beach schools shares her favorite apps

  1. Pocket Universe Express - You aim your iPad at the sky and it shows you the stars you're facing.  You can put it in day or night view to see stars and constellations.
  2. iCell - plant and animal cells in 3D, you can pinch, zoom, rotate, etc. to really explore.  Great way to intro and let kids explore cells
  3. Geoboard - virtual geoboard.  Choose your rubberbands and place them on the virtual geoboard.  Can choose to color in the area a rubberband is surrounding.
  4. DocsTeach - works hand in hand with a website from the National Archive.  docsteach.org  Fara's sample site code is wec565 - you can pull in any document from the National Archive into any lesson
  5. Flat Stanley - you can create him or her any way you like, then add your Flat Stanley or Stella to any photo.  You can open a camera within the app that will take a picture with your Flat Stanley in the picture.
  6. Apples - telling time facts
  7. Trading Cards - upload the image, then students fill in info to create a trading card about a fictional or real person, fictional or real place, object, event, artifact, vocab word, etc.
  8. Word Mover - like refrigerator magnets of words pertaining to a particular topic that you can then manipulate.  Ex:  words from the Preamble.  You can also create your own word lists.
  9. Master the Math - kind of lime Who Wants to be a Millionaire with math questions, and it collects data.

Kim from VA Beach schools shares her favorite apps

  1. Animator - flipbooks
  2. Toontastic - kids brainstorm a story idea, then create a cartoon by drawing or choosing a background.  There are 5 story parts, and students set parameters and music.
  3. Puppet Pals - similar to Toontastic, but you can bring in your own characters and backgrounds from your pictures.
  4. Tangrams - virtual tangram manipulatives
  5. Display Recorder - record yourself - video and your voice - of you demonstrating something on your iPad
  6. Minecraft - virtual world where you break down things and build - can have multiple users in the same world at the same time
  7. Chicken Coop Fractions - a question is posed, and you move the nest to catch the chicken's egg before she lays it so it doesn't break.
  8. OhNo!Fractions - choose greater or less than, then you prove it by drawing the two fractions.  You can choose the largest denominator

Learn to Scratch

Scratch - imagine * program * share

An easy, interactive way to program and have kids program.

Getting Started with Scratch

Two Albemarle County teachers (Jon - middle school), and Erica (Elementary) hold Coder Dojo classes after school where kids come together to learn Scratch and make programs. Here's their presentation on SCRATCH

Main components:

  • Palette of COMMANDS - 1st column on left
  • Scripts/Costumes/Sounds - 2nd column
  • SCRIPTS for Sprites
  • Stage - view window with background
  • Sprites - characters/components
  • Start & Stop - button on top right that allows you to preview
Kinect2Scratch - You don't need an Xbox, just the Kinect bar and this software, and this software will record movement so you can use Scratch to make interactive games that respond to your movement.

Sample cards (shown in the presentation) for kids to use for practice available for download on the Scratch site.

Check out the Scratch Project site to see some of the many projects others have made.  Neat stuff.

Being Smart with SMART

Dr. Michael Rossi
mrossi@vicom-corp.com

works best when you have response in class EVERYDAY!
-taking roll/attendance
-continuous formative assessment for understanding
-ask questions on the fly
-when kids don't have clicker in hands, they know they dont' have to pay attentioin

How to avoid turning your back on students when at the board...& how to maintain engagement

To erase or not to erase: (don't turn your back to erase & waste valuable seconds or allow disengagement)
simply just add a blank page
at end of class, convert handwriting to text & save
OR use the Clear ink icon--not a default on the toolbar

Imbed Browser or webpages in pages Notebook 11
Insert
Internet Browser
Pin it! (if you don't pin it, it will default to the smart page browser) then save file
If you use dual page...you can drag items from web browser to new page

Single touch board? How to make it more interactive...
options: add wireless computer mouse, add smart slate, your iPad & iPhone (doceri free app for iPad) allows you to navigate in the room & use your iPad) (reflection app--$14.99 needs port opened for iPad to work through network)

Notebook Express or Viewer--free download from smarttech.com

Page Recording (located in properties tab)
recording begins when pen hits the board; stop recording
play/pause for discussion...for playback

Linking Resources to Save Time
-link to a web page
-linking to a file on this computer
-link to an attachment

Have you Heard?

**Personal Note: This session was not what I expected from the title; but so many other people got up & left once he did the intro about this session being about audio enhancement products that I felt bad & couldn't leave.

Here's a few things I noted:

sound decreases 6 dB every time distance is doubled
there is an app for sound decibel reading

audio enhancement products--infrared devices
adding microphone system to teacher; speakers installed in ceilings and in back of room
amazing results in achievement!
most kids reported that they liked that the teacher didn't have to yell
great for classroom management
